What Does The Bible Say About Ash Wednesday?

What does the Bible really say about Ash Wednesday and Lent? Absolutely nothing! These traditions are purely man made pagan religiousity at it’s best. What the Bible does say about fasting is this:

16 “Moreover, when you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 17 But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. -Matthew 6:16-18 NKJV

Sound Familiar?

Furthermore, In the book of Galatians chapter 4 the Apostle Paul warns us about the bondage of false religious traditions, rules and rituals…

But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11 I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain. -Galatians 4:9-11

I urge you as believers to follow Christ and not man. Seek God in His living word and in prayer. Choose Truth over tradition!

NickdoG – Disciple Of God – 2. So Conflicted

Coming right off the intro of the album is the first full song ‘So Conflicted’ (track 2 on the cd). This beat was produced by DJ Naydee out of New York and was definitely a different vibe than anything I had ever flowed on before. The emotional pianos and strings really spoke to me and moved me to share some of my personal testimony on this song. At the very end of post production I got the idea t…o incorporate some of the same piano into the spoken part of the album intro (previous link I shared) and I think it really flowed well together to open the album up. The concept of the song was just to share some of my own experience and perspective of self serving, self medicating and sinful living. That is the message of being so conflicted, feeling empty and really just lost, ultimately crying out for something else, something bigger, something true.

In the 2nd verse I touched on a different avenue that I’ve travelled in my life. The self ambitious pathway to prove our own worth and ‘establish’ ourselves. I thank God for showing me my need for Him from so many unique angles. This is an illustration of a hugely pivotal moment in my life. Recognizing and realizing I can’t build it with my own hands and when I try it will eventually come crashing down. This brings the moment of bent knees, teary eyes and a broken heart… so convicted.

The 3rd verse looks at things after surrender. Some of the pressures and outside opinions that come with the territory of walking with the Lord. The curiosity and speculation that builds in people observing the new creation, finally leading to the unveiling of the reason and Master Architect of the transformation.

The sinner’s prayer was added as an afterthought. I don’t believe that it’s the prayer itself that solidifies or commemorates the moment of salvation. I personally have said many prayers of surrender over the years. In some church circles there is too much of an emphasis on “How long have you been saved?”. It’s almost like “How long have you been from this gang?” or “How long have you been at this job?”. I can remember saying “the prayer” in 11th or 12th grade after battling some crazy addiction pitfalls and what seemed to be demonic stuff, but the truth is I wasn’t ready to surrender. I’m a stubborn dude so maybe it’s just me but it wasn’t until my heart really committed all aspects of my life to God that I sincerely began walking with Christ, that I really became a new creation. People say a lot of things with their words but God knows the truth of our hearts. The prayer I say at the end of this song is the actual prayer I said when I truly and whole heartedly surrendered my life and everything in it to Jesus. This is the word for word prayer led by Pastor Ed at the Packinghouse. This was the real deal for me and that’s why I decided to include it. These words can be the vehicle to accept Christ into your life and soul but your heart must be aligned with your words…

Read The Bible In Just 90 Days

I’d like to personally invite you all to join me as I endeavor to read through the entire Bible, cover to cover, Genesis to Revelation in 90 days. I know it sounds like a huge challenge but the fact is that if you can dedicate yourself to read just 12 pages a day you can do it! This will amount to about 30 minutes to an hour per day based on average reading speeds.

My plan is to jump right into the Word upon waking up and get into the habit of doing so. Then after this 90 day challenge the habit will be instilled and I can focus on continued, more in depth, studies etc. So will you join me?

Here’s a cool bookmark/chart to track your progress and stay on course for a 90 day completion. It’s a pdf file so you can easily print it, cut it out and put it into your bible.

Do You Have An Open Mind?

Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures.

Luke 24:45

A common reaction I’ve gotten when sharing scripture is “yeah, I know, I’ve read the bible plenty of times”. While it’s definitely always a good thing to read the divine Word of God it’s also very important that we are equipped to truly understand the profound life changing words in the text.

In this final chapter of Luke we see the resurrected Christ appearing and speaking to His disciples. They were having a tough time believing what they saw as He stood before them, risen from the grave, explaining that the prophecy of the scriptures must be and was being fufilled.

We can more often than not be closed minded and hard headed about what we decide to believe in. This is where faith comes in. Faith is defined by the apostle Paul in Hebrews 11:1 as …the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

It is by this very faith that we can open our minds, bodies and souls to God that He would dwell in us. It is only when He comes into our being and fills us with His Spirit that we can truly begin to understand the scriptures and begin to be transformed by them.

As we grow in our walk with God our understanding of His Word also grows. Jesus Christ is the key to open this door of comprehension. It is crucial that every time as we get into reading from the Bible that we ask God to fill us with His Holy Spirit that He would open our understanding, that we might comprehend His Scriptures.

Thank you God for giving us Your living Word and opening our minds by faith that we can grow and know You more!

How’s Your Signal?

1 Peter 3:12 “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their prayers; But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

Can you hear me now? Don’t you just hate when you lose your cell phone signal in the middle of a very important conversation? Right when you get to that moment of telling the other person exactly how you feel you realize the call was dropped and you’re actually just talking to yourself… for most of us there’s certain places we know are “dead zones”. Anytime you’re there you can’t even get a single bar of reception.

In this verse I believe Peter is talking about how sin and evil can put a serious damper on our prayer signal strength. In the verse prior he tells us “turn away from evil and do good” and “seek peace and pursue it” Peter even gives us the remedy to boost the signal. Seeking the Lord and His righteousness ensures that He is receiving our prayers at full strength. We all fall short of righteousness but God has given each and every one of us free will that we can apply to keeping the signal as strong as possible.

Some of you may not remember radio knob tuners. I remember hearing my favorite song on the radio and then getting a bunch of static messing it up. You would then have to carefully turn the knob just a little bit to get the best reception and clarity. Let’s all do our best to tune in to the Holy Spirit and keep the signal strong!
